Family Law Done Differently

Let us help you move beyond your separation and create a plan for the path forward

If you are in the midst of a family law matter, you know it can be stressful and overwhelming. During this challenging time, a dedicated, empathetic and skilled family lawyer can make a significant difference in the outcome.

At Align Family Law, we provide our clients with a range of options. You choose how much help you get with your family law matter. Our involvement can be limited in scope to helping with one specific part of your case, or as involved as full representation through to resolution. We tailor our family law services to your specific needs.

I thank my lucky stars to have found Align Family Law to guide me through the process of my separation. I had no idea how to navigate the legalities of separation, what it entailed, what my responsibilities were, or how to even begin the process. Joanne immediately reassured me on a very human level that all would be resolved and that I would be able to start the next chapter of my life.”

Family Law Services At A Predictable Price

When you work with a family lawyer who only uses unlimited retainers and charges based on the time they spend working on your file, it can be hard to get a sense at the outset of how much it might all end up costing you.

At Align Family Law, we do things differently. We provide our clients with a range of options for legal representation. You choose how much help you get with your family law matter.

For some clients, it makes sense to hire Align Family Law to represent them in all aspects of their case and handle all issues, negotiations and document preparation. In this full representation model, you are charged for the time the lawyer spends on your family matter.

Other clients may want help with only specific parts of their case, and they can pick from our menu of services on a flat-rate basis.

We also offer Legal Coaching, where we coach people who are representing themselves in their family law case through scheduled coaching sessions.

Steps to resolving your family law matter with Align Family Law

Each situation is different, but here are the steps we generally follow:

1

Conflict Search

We ensure there is no potential conflict of interest.
2

Initial Consultation & Strategy Session

You fill out our questionnaire with the details of your family and situation. We meet via Zoom or in-person to discuss your situation in detail. We provide legal advice and information on your rights, obligations and options.
3

Define Scope of Work

If we both decide to work together, we will sign an engagement agreement that sets out the scope and cost of the work Align Family Law will be doing for you.
4

Choose the Specific Help You Need with Your Family Case

You are in charge; you pick and choose the services you need, when you need them. Align Family Law can assist you with the parts of your family law matter you need help with, and then you can handle parts on your own to save money.

  • First, you meet with a lawyer from Align Family Law for an Initial Consultation, where we will:
    • Discuss your family law matter,
    • Provide legal advice and information and
    • Make a strategic plan.
  • We offer a menu of family law services for you to choose from.
  • You select which services you will hire Align Family Law to perform.
  • You pay as you go for the services you need, as you need them, rather than having to pay a large up-front retainer.
  • You handle the other parts of your case on your own.
  • As you work through your family law matter, you can:
    • purchase Legal Coaching hours to get guidance and mentorship as you work through specific parts of your family law matter, and/or
    • hire Align Family Law to complete other specific legal services.

It all starts with an Initial Consultation. Contact us today to get clarity on your family law matter.

Initial Consultation

$350 plus taxes

During this meeting, you will meet with an Align Family Law lawyer for up to 1 hour to discuss your family law matter, obtain legal advice and information and discuss what your next steps might be.

If you are contemplating separation, an initial consultation is a good first step to help you get yourself organized, learn more about your legal rights and obligations and begin to chart a path forward. The initial consultation can help determine whether the lawyer you meet with is a good fit for you, whatever stage you are at in your family law matter. You can also learn about our options for representation with Align Family Law.

Divorce-Only Packages

We provide divorce-only packages that are available if all other issues such as parenting, division of property and debt, and spousal support and child support have been previously resolved by either a separation agreement or by a court order. These packages only apply to situations where the claim will proceed on an “uncontested” basis (the other party will not/does not file a response to the divorce claim).

1

Divorce Package if there are no “children of the marriage” pursuant to the Divorce Act

$1,600 plus taxes and disbursements
2

Divorce Package if you have “children of the marriage” pursuant to the Divorce Act AND have a current separation agreement or court order that adequately deals with child support

$2,000 plus taxes and disbursements
3

Divorce Package if you have “children of the marriage” pursuant to the Divorce Act AND need an updated child support agreement

$2,750 plus taxes and disbursements

Independent Legal Advice On Family Law Agreements

(Cohabitation, Marriage or Separation Agreements)

$950 plus taxes and disbursements

Before you sign a family law agreement drafted by the other side’s lawyer, Align Family Law can review the agreement, provide you with independent legal advice (ILA) to ensure you understand what the agreement means, the importance of full financial disclosure, and how the agreement will affect your obligations and rights.

The package includes:

  • In depth review of the agreement by the lawyer in advance of the client meeting;
  • One meeting of up to 1.5 hours with you to review the terms of the agreement, provide legal advice on its contents, and potential alternatives for you to consider.

* The above fees do not include negotiating changes with the opposing party or the opposing party’s lawyer or preparing or exchanging significant financial disclosure. These steps will require a full-service retainer and will be charged at our regular rate of $350/hour.

** Please note that purchase of the ILA package does not guarantee your lawyer will sign the Certificate of Independent Legal Advice attached to your agreement.

Legal Coaching

Align Family Law offers legal coaching in pay-as-you-go, pre-paid packages. Our coaching packages can be combined with any of our other flat-rate services.

Coaching services are provided in scheduled appointments.

Legal coaching may be for you if you have chosen to represent yourself through your family law matter but want some help navigating the process. Perhaps you are self-represented because you don’t want to hire a lawyer, or perhaps you can’t afford or don’t want to commit to full legal representation. Whatever the reason, Align Family Law provides guidance and mentorship for people who have chosen to represent themselves through their family law matter.

Align Family Law can help you work through specific parts of your family law matter.

Book a strategy session to develop a plan on any of the following topics:

  • Resolving problems out of court
  • Starting or replying to a family court proceeding
  • Guidance in drafting a financial statement
  • Disclosing documents and information to the other party
  • Preparing for a Judicial Case Conference
  • Preparing for a Mediation
  • How to correspond with the opposing lawyer
  • Making or responding to a settlement offer
  • How to act in court
  • What to expect at various stages of the court process

You are in charge of what we discuss and what portions of your family law matter you want coaching through.
